Launch of Fully Online Degree in Environmental Planning and Management

Beginning this fall, EPP will offer its M.S. degree program in Environmental Planning and Management fully online. The focus of this program is on water resources planning.

"The online curriculum will emphasize the relationships between environmental engineering and science and public policy, with particular attention to decision-making tools and policy analysis, as well as the role of economic factors in environmental management and water resource planning," said Hedy Alavi, chair of EPP's Environmental Engineering, Science and Management Program.

On June 27th, EPP hosted an online Open House event that enabled prospective students to participate in chat rooms with faculty, admissions staff, and a current student, as well as an interactive audio-visual session featuring the program chair. Information and a recorded video session from that event can be viewed at http://www.epp.jhu.edu.

New Course Offerings at HEAT Center in Aberdeen

HEAT CenterThis fall EPP is offering courses from the Systems Engineering and Environmental Engineering programs at the HEAT Center in Aberdeen, Maryland. New course offerings include System Conceptual Design and Sustainable Development & Next Generation Buildings.

Computer Science Concentration in Information Assurance

In recognition of the increasing importance of IT and internet security issues facing computer scientists, this spring EPP introduced a concentration in Information Assurance in the Computer Science program. An Advanced Certificate for Post Master's Study with a concentration in Information Assurance is also available.

Implementation of ISIS Online Records & Registration Application

On July 16, Johns Hopkins University moves closer to the completion of the Integrated Student Information System (ISIS) project with the implementation of the Records and Registration application. The system will provide students access to financial aid, billing, and enrollment records in one location with the same interface. Similarly, faculty will have a number of features, including course rosters with detailed student information and grade entry, available through a single website.

Strong authentication security assures confidential access to information by students and faculty using any popular web browser and their JHED Login ID and password.

Dexter Smith Named Program Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering Program

Dexter SmithThis spring, Dexter G. Smith, a member of the principal professional staff at the Applied Physics Laboratory and the Laboratory's Biomedicine Business Area executive, was appointed the new program chair of EPP's Electrical and Computer Engineering Program. As the new chair, Dr. Smith will oversee course development, course scheduling, instructor hiring, student admissions review and decisions, student advising, and overall student satisfaction.

Dr. Smith "has been an active member of the Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty for many years, teaching and developing new courses as well as serving as the program's vice-chair for the past seven years," said Nick Jones, dean of the Whiting School of Engineering. "He has a sound vision for moving the program forward, and I believe he is ideally suited to carry on the tradition of excellence of this curriculum."

Helping Small Business Succeed at Montgomery County Campus

Montegomery County CampusOn June 12th at the Montgomery County Campus, more than 70 alumni, students, and guests gathered to hear tips about small business success from three guest speakers: Ed Addison, CEO, TeraDisc, and EPP Lecturer; Guy Timberlake, CEO, The American Small Business Coalition (ASBC); and Sam Lloyd, Assistant Secretary for Small Business, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.

"Collaboration is what causes innovation to happen," said Addison, kicking off the morning's program. He also told the audience that "people before product" is critical to success and that without a good team even the best product will not get off the ground, or find funding.

2007 EPP Excellence in Teaching Awards

Congratulations to Michael Hagler, Robert Ivester, and Daniel Jablonski, this year's recipients of EPP's Excellence in Teaching Awards. These awards, presented on April 30th at the Whiting School of Engineering's Convocation Awards Ceremony, were established to acknowledge the achievements of all who serve as teachers and mentors at EPP.

Michael Hagler, who retired this summer, served most recently as the managing executive of the Technical Services Department at the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), and taught in the Technical Management Program since 1989. Robert Ivester is a researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and has been teaching in the Mechanical Engineering Program since 2000. Daniel Jablonski, a member of the principal professional staff at APL has been teaching in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Program since 1999.

Hedy Alavi Receives 2007 Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award

Hedy AlaviDr. Hedy Alavi, chair of EPP's Environmental Engineering, Science and Management Program, was selected as this year's recipient of the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award. The award, presented on April 30th at the Whiting School of Engineering's Convocation Ceremony, honors extraordinary dedication to the University's teaching mission, exceptional performance in the classroom, and a continuing commitment to tomorrow's leaders.

Before joining the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1996, Dr. Alavi, an expert in hazardous and solid waste engineering, was a Maryland Department of the Environment administrator. He also currently serves as assistant to the dean for international programs, helping the school establish research and academic collaborations with universities and industries in other nations.

Suzanne Jenniches Receives 2007 William Donald Schaefer Industrialist of the Year Award

Suzanne JennichesSuzanne Jenniches, chair of the EPP Advisory Council from 2003-2006 and Vice-President and General Manager, Government Systems Division at Northrop Grumman, is this year's recipient of the William Donald Schaefer Industrialist of the Year Award. The award, which was introduced in 2004, recognizes and celebrates Maryland's visionary business leaders distinguished by their innovative approaches to industryand dedication to the well-being of their communities.

Jenniches also currently serves on the Whiting School of Engineering's National Advisory Council. In 2006, she was named as a Johns Hopkins Distinguished Alumna.

Maryland Department of the Environment Appoints new Secretary & Deputy

Shari WilsonCongratulations to Shari Wilson who was confirmed as Secretary of the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) this spring. Ms. Wilson teaches the Environmental Law for Engineers and Scientists course for EPP and has also participated as a member of EPP's Outreach Advisory Committee for the Whiting School of Engineering's Center for Hazardous Substances in Urban Environments.

In addition, Bob Summers was appointed Deputy Secretary of MDE. Summers is a Ph.D. graduate of the WSE's Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at Johns Hopkins and is a leading water quality and Chesapeake Bay restoration expert. He is co-teaching an EPP online course in Water Resources Management.
